Launch of the National Awareness Campaign on Traffic Accident Prevention, Summer Season 2026

Algiers, July 8, 2026

The Ministry of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, through the National Road Safety Delegation (DNSR), is organizing, in partnership with SONATRACH, a national awareness campaign on traffic accident prevention for the summer season. This campaign, will run from July 8 through August 31, 2026, under the slogan: ‘During the holidays, responsible driving… protects my family.’

This initiative is being launched during a period traditionally marked by a surge in road accidents.

Within this framework, an integrated program of local activities, awareness, and information will be implemented for the benefit of various road users, especially those most at risk of accidents, including young people and children.

This campaign aims to promote responsible behavior and foster the culture of prevention and road safety.

The official kick off of this campaign took place today in the wilaya of Tipaza, under the supervision of the Wali, on the occasion of open days focused on road safety and various local activities. The ceremony involved the main road safety stakeholders, including the National Gendarmerie Command, the General Directorate of National Security, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, as well as representatives from civil society.

Among the main actions on the agenda is the organization of a national awareness caravan on road accident risks, which will cross six (06) coastal wilayas: Tipaza, Algiers, Béjaïa, Skikda, Oran, and Tizi Ouzou. At each stop along the way, informational, awareness, and community activities are scheduled for the benefit of the citizens.

In a similar way, the wilaya delegations for road safety have also launched, across the whole country, the implementation of their local programs to raise awareness and prevent road accidents, tailored to the specific road environments of each wilaya.

Organized for the second consecutive year; this campaign is part of the cooperation agreement signed between SONATRACH and the National Delegation for Road Safety on July 4, 2018, and renewed on April 23, 2025. This partnership reflects SONATRACH’s steady commitment to its social responsibility and its long-lasting dedication to promoting road safety culture.

As a reminder, based on the statistics from the National Road Safety Delegation, 7,430 traffic accidents causing injuries were recorded across the country during the summer season of 2025 (June, July, and August), resulting in 1,131 deaths and 10,694 injuries.

Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents and injuries rose by 5.09% and 6.44% respectively, while the number of deaths saw a decrease of 2.42%.

These figures are still a matter of concern and point to the necessity to maintain all stakeholder’s involvement, while also strengthening prevention and awareness efforts to reinforce in a sustainable way a culture of road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
