Mostaganem,22nd November 2025
Heading a delegation of senior executives, Mr. Nour Eddine DAOUDI, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of SONATRACH Group, travelled yesterday, Friday 21st November 2025, to Mostaganem in a working visit. At his arrival, he was received by the Wali of Mostaganem, Mr. Ahmed BOUDOUH, accompanied By Mr. Idriss ABBAS, President of the Wilaya People’s Assembly, as well as representatives of civil and security authorities.
This visit is made in accordance with the directives of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, as part of the implementation of the second additional water desalination program. Thus, the works of the project regarding the seawater desalination plant of Sidi Ladjel in the municipality of El khadra, wilaya of Mostaganem were launched, today, in the presence of the Wali of Mostaganem, and the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the Algerian Water Desalination Company (EADE) , Mr. Lahcen BADA and the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the Algerian Company of the Realization of Industrial Projects (SARPI), Mr Tarek NOUIZI.
The seawater desalination plant project is located in the Sidi Ladjel region of the wilaya of Mostaganem. This site was selected on account of its strategic location and its capacity to serve several neighboring wilayas in western Algeria, which have recorded a significant decrease in rainfall over the recent years. The project, to be built under a turnkey FEED+EPC model, was entrusted to the Algerian Industrial Projects Company (SARPI), a subsidiary of the SONATRACH Group, which had already completed the El Tarf seawater desalination plant.
Spanning an estimated total area of 12 hectares, the Sidi Ladjel plant will have an overall production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day upon completion, using reverse osmosis technology, a globally recognized desalination technology. Partial delivery of the project is projected in 22 months from now, with an initial production capacity of 150,000 cubic meters per day.
Like the plants already completed, this project represents a step forward towards Algeria’s water sovereignty and will strengthen its capacity to address the effects of climate change; the expansion of the desalination plant network will allow for a gradual response to the growing demand for drinking water.
The future Sidi Ladjel plant will contribute to supplying drinking water to nearly three million citizens in the wilayas of Mostaganem, Tissemsilt, and Tiaret, thereby easing the pressure on regional dams and groundwater resources. While creating direct and indirect jobs during the construction, operation, and maintenance phases of the plant, the completion of this project will also facilitate the transfer of technology and expertise to the benefit of Algerian talents.
End of press release.
