Rome, 23 July 2025
As part of the official visit of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Italy, SONATRACH Group and the Italian company Eni signed a memorandum of understanding today aimed at strengthening cooperation in the energy sector.
This memorandum, aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of hydrocarbons, energy transition, and renewable energies, was signed by Mr. Rachid HACHICHI, Chairman and CEO of the SONATRACH Group, and his counterpart, Mr. Claudio DESCALZI, CEO of the Italian group Eni, under the supervision of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, and Ms. Giorgia MELONI, Italian Prime Minister.
This Memorandum of Understanding reflects the parties’ intention and shared willingness to strengthen their cooperation with the aim of ensuring sustainable economic development and energy security in both countries. SONATRACH and Eni also commit to consolidating their cooperation to develop Algerian energy resources through new hydrocarbon contracts aimed at increasing gas production, which will allow the extension of gas supply contracts for export to Italy.
Regarding the development of renewable energies and energy transition, the two companies commit to firming their collaboration in this area, particularly through the definition of new initiatives.
This memorandum of understanding follows the recent signing between SONATRACH and Eni of two hydrocarbon contracts on the Zemoul El Kbar and Reggane II areas. These, along with the initiatives covered by this memorandum, will contribute to increasing gas production by 5.5 billion cubic meters per year by 2028.
