SONATRACH supervises the signing of contracts for the construction of three (03) new seawater desalination plants in the wilayas of Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem

Today, at the headquarters of the General Management of SONATRACH, three contracts were signed for the construction of three new seawater desalination plants, respectively in Ain Adjroud in the Municipality of Marsa Benmhidi (Wilaya of Tlemcen), Dahra in the Municipality of El Marsa (Wilaya of Chlef) and Sidi Ladjel in the Municipality of El Khadra (Wilaya of Mostaganem).

This ceremony also included the signing of a Memorundum of Understanding between the Algerian Desalination Company and Algérienne des Eaux. 

The ceremony took place in the presence of Mr. Mohamed ARKAB, Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mr. Taha DERBAL, Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Nour Eddine DAOUDI, Chairman and CEO of SONATRACH, Mr. Lahcen BADA, Chairman and CEO of the Algerian Desalination Company, and Mr.MUSTAPHA REKIK, The Director General of the Algerian Water Company, as well as the CEOs of the companies in charge of the construction of the plants and senior executives of the SONATRACH Group.

 The construction of these three plants, having each a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day upon completion, is part of the first phase of the additional national program initiated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, which includes the construction of six large water desalination plants.


The national additional program aims to meet the growing citizens ‘needs for drinking water, in compliance with the national approach of increasing national production of desalinated seawater up to 5.6 million cubic meters per day by 2030, thus contributing to bolster water security in a sustainable way and meeting the needs of social and economic development in the different Wilayas of the country.

Algerian Desalination Company (a subsidiary of the SONATRACH Group) will supervise the construction works of these three plants, which has been entrusted to specialized and experienced national companies. In this context, Cosider Canalisation (a subsidiary of the Cosider Group) will build the plant in the wilaya of Tlemcen. The National Company for Major Petroleum Works (a SONATRACH subsidiary) will be responsible for building the plant in the wilaya of Chlef.

The construction of the plant in the wilaya of Mostaganem will be entrusted to the Algerian Industrial Projects Company (a SONATRACH subsidiary).

It is worth mentioning that these projects will contribute to the creation of a significant number of direct and indirect job positions both during the construction and operation phases, as well as supporting training programs and the development of national skills in the field of seawater desalination. These projects reflect SONATRACH ‘s unwavering commitment as a responsible corporate citizen, working to accelerate the transition towards sustainable water security and to provide facilities capable of taking up future challenges.
