The Algerian Gas Industry Association announces Algeria’s election at theExecutive Committee of the International Gas Union (IGU)

Algiers, May 28, 2025


On the occasion of the 29th session of the World Gas Congress organized by the International
Gas Union (IGU) in Beijing in the People’s Republic of China, from 19 to 23 May 2025, Algeria
was elected to sit at the Executive Committee of this Union.


In this framework, Dr.Djilali Benmahamed, member of the AIG and Director of planning, studies
and performance at SONATRACH Liquefaction and Separation Activity, will represent Algeria as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Gas Union (IGU) for the triennium 2025-2028 under the chairmanship of Italy.


This organization at the core of the strategic management of the organization, supervises all the works of the IGU Committees, steers the priorities of the triennium and supports the major
developments of the world gas sector.


Endorsed by the statutory members of IGU, this election acknowledges the committed track
record of the AIG and its proven expertise serving the development of the gas sector, both on the national and international levels. It is also part of the new dynamics driven by AIG in favour of open governance, a reinforced dialogue with stakeholders and a strategic positioning of Algeria on the global energy fora.


Moreover, it should be noted that the AIG chaired during the last three trienniums the presidency of the Strategy and Prospective Committee, the most important committee of IGU as well as the Presidency of the Gas Markets Committee and the Presidency of LNG Committee.


As a reminder, AIG is a scientific and technical national association, chaired by Mr. Rachid
HACHICHI, SONATRACH Chairman and CEO. It was created in 1993 by SONATRACH and
SONELGAZ in order to provide a forum of reflection and convergence of national expertise for
the promotion and development of Algerian gas industry both on the national and international levels.


As to IGU, it constitutes a unique strategic forum where the major gas orientations are outlined in the global energy transition.


With this appointment, Algeria strengthens its position in the international decision-making bodies and asserts its central role in the Euro-Mediterranean gas supply.
