Chlef, December 13th, 2025.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SONATRACH Group, Mr. Nour Eddine DAOUDI, launched, today, the construction site of a seawater desalination plant in Dahra, in the wilaya of Chlef, in the attendance of the Wali of Chlef, Mr. Ibrahim GHMIRED, the Chief Executive Officer of Algeria Desalination Company (ADC), Mr. Lahcen BADA, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Company for Major Petroleum Works (ENGTP), Mr. MAAMRI Benyoucef, as well as representatives of the People’s Wilaya Assembly, both chambers of Parliament, and civil and security authorities.
This new plant is part of the second additional national program endorsed by the President of the Republic, Mister. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, which aims to reinforce water security by the construction of large desalination plants in the wilayas of Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen, each having a production capacity of up to 300,000 m³/day.
The Dahra plant will provide the EL Marsa municipality with a sustainable supply of drinking water to more than three million inhabitants of the wilayas of Chlef, Médéa, Aïn Defla, and Tissemsilt, within a perimeter spanning 150 to 250 kilometers. The project was entrusted to the National Company for Major Petroleum Works (ENGTP), under the supervision of Algeria Desalination Company (ADC), both subsidiaries of SONATRACH Group, thus reasserting the Group’s commitment to supporting vital socio-economic projects.
The project will also contribute to the creation of a significant number of jobs, both during the construction and operational phases, and will underpin national training and skills development programs in the desalination sector.
The launch of the Dahra desalination plant (SDEM) is a major step forward within the framework of a national approach to increase desalinated water production capacity to 5.6 million m³/day by 2030, thereby strengthening sustainable water security and meeting the socio-economic development needs of the various wilayas of the country.
This project demonstrates SONATRACH’s unwavering commitment to accelerating the transition to sustainable water security and building an infrastructure capable of taking up future challenges.
