Under the high patronage of the Prime Minister, the SONATRACH Group, in partnership with the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, is organizing on November 3rd and 4th, 2026, at Algiers International Conference Center, a workshop dedicated to climate finance and carbon markets, under the theme: “Towards a national strategy for integrated and sustainable governance.”

The opening ceremony of this workshop has been chaired by the Prime Minister, in the presence of the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies and the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life. The Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of SONATRACH Group and the General Director of SONELGAZ are also attending this event, alongside representatives from various national and international institutions and organizations, as well as experts and specialists in climate financing, energy transition, and sustainable development.

Hosting this workshop is part of national efforts aiming to strengthen climate finance governance and promote effective mechanisms for mobilizing the resources needed to address climate change, in an approach that reconciles socioeconomic development goals with Algeria’s environmental and climate commitments.

This initiative also represents an important advance in stepping up coordination among the different sectors and institutions involved, encouraging the sharing of international expertise and experience.

This workshop is particularly important as it is part of the preparations for the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31). As such, it will provide an opportunity to study ways to strengthen the contribution of climate finance and carbon markets to the implementation of national commitments, as well as to explore prospects for international cooperation and opportunities to mobilize the financial and technical resources needed to underpin climate projects.

The workshop program includes a high-level ministerial session, along with a series of workshops on the development of climate finance and international carbon markets, the national institutional and regulatory frameworks adopted in this area, but also the concrete experiences of economic players, notably the SONATRACH and SONELGAZ Groups, in reducing carbon emissions and integrating climate issues into their development strategies. The program includes also three strategic sessions respectively on:

– Aligning climate financing with the priorities of the national development strategy;

– Setting up an integrated regulatory, institutional, and technical framework;

– Developing green finance mechanisms and financial instruments to mobilize the necessary resources.

It also includes workshops focused on developing recommendations to help define priorities, discuss funding needs and strengthen coordination between the various institutions and sectors involved

The event also feature a dedicated exhibition to climate finance and Carbone markets, showcasing green projects, highlighting the available financing mechanisms, and promoting exchanges between project owners, financial institutions, investors, and other potential partners.

In this context, the Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the SONATRACH Group will deliver a keynote on the main strategic approaches of the Group’s climate policy. He will notably highlight the efforts made to end routine gas flaring, emphasizing the ambition to move toward net-zero methane emissions by 2030, as well as actions aimed at improving energy efficiency, developing carbon capture solutions, and exploring the prospects for green hydrogen development.

These commitments attest to the SONATRACH Group’s commitment to strengthening the integration of climate issues into its industrial and energy strategy, a strategic choice that will help ensure the sustainability of its activities, improve its environmental performance, and increase its ability to withstand the changes occurring in international energy and finance markets.

The workshop’s proceedings should round off with the presentation of the results of the three thematic workshops and their recommendations.

Through this initiative, Algeria reasserts its commitment to strengthening the governance of climate action, developing sustainable financing instruments, and consolidating cooperation between national institutions and international partners, in accordance with national development plans and upholding efforts deployed worldwide to fight climate change.End of Press Release
