Algiers, August 17, 2026,
SONATRACH and Eni signed on 17 August, 2026, a letter of intent to identify and promote real prospects and initiatives aimed at the decarbonation of the oil and gas sector and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions—including methane—in Algeria, having recourse to the international best practices within the oil and gas sector
This protocol expands on the work and actions undertaken under the framework of the Memorandum of Intent signed by SONATRACH and Eni in 2023, which focused on technological cooperation relating to the reduction and use of gas flaring, as well as the development of emission-reduction technologies. The outcome of these efforts, including energy audits, led to the identification of mutually beneficial opportunities and the implementation of specific measures.
A structured program of joint activities was implemented, including technical analyses, capacitybuilding initiatives, and site visits aimed at identifying opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas and methane emissions. Targeted training enabled the immediate and accurate implementation of measures on-site. These activities resulted in the identification of initiatives in several areas, including the reduction of fugitive emissions and venting, energy efficiency, flaring reduction and the assessment of carbon capture, utilization, and storage opportunities.
The implementation of the MoU signed in 2023 also enabled the joint execution of a leak detection and repair (LDAR) campaign, resulting in a significant reduction in fugitive emissions. LDAR measurement campaigns are now conducted independently and systematically at the joint ventures operated by SONATRACH and Eni. A baseline emissions assessment was also carried out at six facilities operated by SONATRACH and Eni in Algeria.
The signing of this new protocol will enable to pursue the work initiated in 2023, as well as the exploration of new areas for implementing greenhouse gas emission reduction initiatives. It also aims to boost work team on natural CO₂ capture initiatives through a forestry project
As a reminder, Eni is an integrated energy company active in the exploration, production, refining, and marketing of oil, gas, LNG, electricity, and chemicals. It has an extensive experience in renewable energy, biorefining processes, and the circular economy, and promotes efficient, sustainable access to energy for the benefit of local institutions in the countries where it operates.
