Official Launch of Tlemcen sea water desalination plant project

The Chairman and CEO of the SONATRACH Group, Mr. Nour Eddine DAOUDI, visited the wilaya of Tlemcen today, accompanied by Mr. Youssef BECHLAOUI, Wali of Tlemcen, as well as Mr. Lahcen BADA, Chairman and CEO of the Algerian Seawater Desalination Company, Mrs. BELKHIR Souad, Deputy CEO of the COSIDER Group, and Mr. Badr Eddine CHAHBOUB, Chairman and CEO of Cosider Pipelines. This visit marked the official launch of the Tlemcen seawater desalination project, part of the second national additional seawater desalination program initiated by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE.

Located in the Aïn Adjroud region, on Bider beach in the municipality of Marsa Ben M’hidi, this project has been entrusted to the national company « Cosider Canalisations », a subsidiary of the Cosider Group, under the supervision of the Algerian Water Desalination Company “ADC,” a SONATRACH Group subsidiary.

Spanning a total area of 15 hectares, the future plant is expected to produce 300,000 m³ of water per day upon final commissioning. This plant will use reverse osmosis process, a technology recognized worldwide in the field of desalination. Partial commissioning is planned within 22 months, with an initial production of 150,000 m³/day.

The launch of this project represents a further step in consolidating Algeria’s water sovereignty and boosting the country’s capacity to address the effects of climate change by expanding the national network of desalination plants to meet the growing drinking water demand.

It will ensure the drinking water supply for three million inhabitants of the wilayas of Tlemcen, Sidi Bel Abbes, and Saida, reduce pressure on regional dams and groundwater resources, and create jobs during the construction, operation, and maintenance phases. This project will also contribute to enhancing national expertise in the strategic field of seawater desalination.
